家と広間

地方都市の住宅街に建つ、茶室を併設した新築住宅である。

裏千家の茶道を嗜む建主は、茶室となる八畳の広間と、一人で暮らすための住居を希望した。

伝統的な茶道を体験できる格式高い様式を保ちながら、日常風景や生活環境と良好な関係を築く住宅の在り方が求められた。

まず、日常的に使用する住居を一階に配置し、茶道のための機能を二階に設ける構成とする。各階に機能を集約したコンパクトな容積によって生まれた外部で露地を作り、街や一階の住居と接続させる。日常風景に溶け込ませた露地は、茶道の格式や伝統といった堅苦しさを和らげ、亭主が希望した気兼ねのない茶会を開くことができる。

南側に突き出した上下二段の瓦屋根が訪問者を迎え入れ、職人の手仕事によって丁寧に作られた露地が、客人を茶会へと導く。玄関から続く階段は茶室へと向かう入口となり、非日常空間へとつながる中潜りの役割を果たす。

茶室のディテールや水屋の造りは流派による様式に習っているが、木材、手すき和紙など、地場の材料を使用し、施主自ら選んだ床柱や襖紙などと共に個性として茶室に表れている。

住宅の産業化によって失われつつある建築の伝統的様式の価値を改めて評価し、個人の嗜好性を認めながら、景観に溶け込む汎用性の獲得を目指した現代の茶室の在り方を示唆している。

House and tea room

This is a newly built house located in a residential area of a regional city, featuring an attached tea room.

The client, who practices the Urasenke school of tea ceremony, desired an eight-tatami mat room to serve as a tea room, and a residence for single occupancy.

The goal was to create a house that maintains the dignified style of traditional tea ceremony while fostering a harmonious relationship with the surrounding environment and daily life.

The residence for daily use is located on the ground floor, while the functions for the tea ceremony are placed on the first floor. A garden (roji) is created in the exterior space, made possible by the compact volume of the building, connecting it to the street and the residence. The garden, which blends into the everyday scenery, eases the formality and tradition of the tea ceremony, allowing the host to hold the tea ceremony in the relaxed atmosphere her desires.

While the details of the tea room and the construction of the water room (mizuya) follow the style of the Urasenke school, local materials such as wood and handmade Japanese paper are used, and the client's personal choices, such as the floor pillar and sliding door paper, are reflected in the tea room's unique character.

This project re-evaluates the value of traditional architectural styles that are being lost due to the industrialization of housing construction, and suggests a contemporary approach to the tea room that aims to achieve versatility while blending seamlessly into the landscape.
